This project has been running since the start of this whole ministry. In fact we can say that this project lead to the birth of light up life ministry.
The story is of two people meeting; a nine year old boy named Matthew came running after Herbie Kawuma. "Teach me how to dance" the boy would shout as Herbie passed the ghetto area (a place known for drug dealings and crime). Herbie ignored Matthew’s pleas for dance lessons at first, feeling annoyed that the child was not in school (since he had himself paid for his own and his four siblings’ education, even as an orphan). But finally, Herbie told the eager youth, “Go to school and I’ll teach you to dance” to which Matthew replied, “My father doesn’t have the money to send me to school.”
Herbie was outraged that a father would not provide for his children as he flashed back to the sacrifices his diseased parents made for him while they were still living. He decided to use his influence as a local celebrity to talk some sense into Matthew’s father. “Take me to meet your Dad,” Herbie said, “and when his father opened the door it was just like what you hear people speak of when they talk about life-changing moments,” he confessed. He looked at the ill man and memories of his own ailing father flashed before his eyes. He looked down at Matthew and suddenly recalled his own 9th year as he watched his sickly mother take her last breaths. When Herbie saw Matthew’s Dad (who was also suffering from HIV/AIDS among other illnesses), rather than scold him for not sending his son to school, he asked the frail stranger if he could provide for Matthew himself. At that moment, in that doorway, the spark that would become Light up Life Foundation was ignited.
Together we can
Together we can is a project aiming at motivating youth and children to come together to achieve a common goal.
Light up life holds seminars every year with a mission to empower youth. Through this project we have been creating awareness on HIV/AIDS and how to fight it in our communities.
We also teach youth how they can start up their own business to support themselves and their families.
From time to time we hold seminars, conference and Talks About drugs and crime.
We organise these gatherings in Schools, universties, Prisons Institutions, refugee camps, Churches and youth clubs.
The main Aim to start up this project was to spread the Awareness on HIV/AIDS.
Between the 80s and up to Date AIDs has been an epidemic which has caused death to many hence leaving many children orphans.

Herbie Kawuma, the founder of Light up life, is one of those children who grew up without parents. At the age of nine he watched his mother take her last breath. Losing a parent at such a young age was hard, and life got even harder three years later when his father fell ill. To ease the pain of missing his mother and watching his fathers illness deteriorate he turned to drugs- and alcohol abuse and became a gang member.
At the age of 13 his father died in his arms of the same disease that took his mother - AIDS.
By the grace of God Herbie was able to come out of that dark state and this became a life long lesson. A lesson leaving him with the desire and a strong will to change his life around, the life of others and whoever he meets in his life-path.
